2002 Cedar Creek Christmas Bird Count

The eighteenth Cedar Creek CBC on December 14th, 2002 attracted 27 participants and 8 feeder watchers who tallied 83 species and 98,454 individuals. Pine Warbler and Lesser Black-backed Gull were recorded for the first time bringing the all time species count to 146 species. Record high counts were only observed for Sharp-shinned Hawk, Merlin and Common Grackle. Nuthatches, Tufted Timice and Black-capped Chickadees were very scarce this year and winter finches absent.

Weather conditions for the count were generally good with little snow cover and open water on Lake Erie. Very cold weather predominated earlier in the month. At the end of the day everyone gathered at Tom and Peggy Hurst's for the tally and a pot luck dinner.

PARTICIPANTS: Area 1 Kingsville: (61 species, 9 party-hrs) Tom Hince, Heather Campbell, Dean Ware (fw), Peggy Hurst (fw), Sarah Kuipers (fw).   Area 2 Cedar Beach: (42 species, 15 party-hrs) Betty Learmouth, Kathy Lesperance, Margaret Calder, Bob Wickett, Lois Dobson, Ian Woodfield.   Area 3 Gesto: (34 species, 25.5 party-hrs) Shirley Grondin, JoAnn Grondin, Bernard Beneteau (fw), Ralph Billingsley (fw), Phil Roberts (crow co-ordinator), Jim McAllister, Claire McAllister, Donna Cowie, Helene Parks, June Hurely, Bob Sanford, Janet Tuite and three feeder watchers (fw).   Area 4 South Colchester: (62 species, 21 party-hrs) Thomas Hurst, Richard Smith, Keith Burk, Jim Burk, Randy Horvath, Ron Muir.   Area 5 Harrow: (57 species, 13 party-hrs) Paul Pratt, Karen Cedar, Tom Preney, Kristen Fawdry.
