IT'S AN IMPOSTER!

EASTERN HOGNOSE SNAKE
Heterodon platirhinos

The curious, shovel-like tip of the nose is what gives the hognose snake its name.  These snakes are specialized predators of toads, and are usually found in sandy areas.  Although they are harmless, these snakes are excellent actors.  When threatened they put on a display of toughness by flaring the neck, hissing loudly, and striking (with mouth closed).  If that doesn't work, they adopt another strategy - rolling over and playing dead!
