The Cedar Creek CBC covers the central southern portion of Essex County, Ontario including Kingsville, Harrow, McGregor, Essex and a portion of the Lake Erie shoreline.

 

2004 Cedar Creek Christmas Bird Count



The twentieth Cedar Creek CBC held on December 18th, 2004 attracted 38 participants (including 7 feeder watchers) who tallied 80 species (long term average is 83) and 62,492 individuals. American Black Duck and Kingfisher were only recorded for count week. Highlights included:

Common Loon - (1) Kingsville Harbour, third count
Double-crested Cormorant - (3) fifth count
Bufflehead - record high count of 29 (previous high of 21 in 2001)
Cooper's Hawk - record high count of 11 (tied with 2001)
Northern Goshawk - (1) fifth count
Killdeer - (1) Harrow sewage lagoons
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - (2)record high count (tie with 1987)
Hairy Woodpecker - (14) record high count (previous high of 10 in 1986)
Red-bellied Woodpecker - (40) second highest count, numbers inceasing
Northern Flicker - record high count of 65 (previous high of 55 in 2000)
American Crow - 46,925 (The roost is on County Rd. 8 opposite the new Canadian Tire Store in Essex)
Carolina Wren - (36)numbers inceasing
Winter Wren - record high count of 19 (previous high of 16 in 1997)
American Robin - (78) second highest count
Cedar Waxwing - (127) second highest count
Northern Shrike - (1) tenth count
Eastern Towhee - (6) second highest count
Savannah Sparrow - (1) seventh count

Weather on count day was cloudy with very little snow cover and open water on Lake Erie. The only portion of the count to exceed its long term average species total was Area 3. At the end of the day we gathered at Tom and Peggy Hurst's for the tally and pot luck dinner.

PARTICIPANTS: Area 1 Kingsville: (52 species, 17.5 party-hrs) Bob Sanford, Heather Anne Campbell, Janet Tuite, Alan Wormington, two feeder watchers.   Area 2 Cedar Beach: (35 species, 14 party-hrs) Betty Learmouth, Clarence & Margaret Calder, Paul DesJardins, Denise Hartley, Bob Wickett, Pauline Renaud, Ian Woodfield.   Area 3 Gesto: (39 species, 21.5 party-hrs) JoAnn Grondin, Shirley Grondin, A.L. Meloche, Phil Roberts (crow roost co-ordinator), Bev Wannick, Donna Cowie, Helene Parks, three feeder watchers.   Area 4 South Colchester: (58 species, 24.5 party-hrs) Thomas Hurst, Keith Burk, Jim Burk, Steve Pike, Randy Horvath, Ron Muir, one feeder watcher.   Area 5 Harrow: (53 species, 13.5 party-hrs) Paul Pratt, Karen Cedar, Nancy Cristofoli, Neal Connolly, Linda Tucker, Darlene Tucker, one feeder watcher.
