September 2009 Sightings in the Windsor Area
Tuesday, September 01: Tom Preney and Shane Butnari saw over 50 Common Nighthawks this evening. The birds were migrating over the Detroit River in LaSalle. Saturday, September 05: There is a huge pre-migration swallow roost in the marsh at the north end of Fighting Island (estimate of +20,000). we saw them spiral into the marsh for 20 minutes begining at sunset. The best vantage point from the mainland would be from the end of Wahneta Ave (Mona's Restaurant) in LaSalle. Use binoculars to look directly across the river behind the docked tug boats. The number of Mute Swans along the Detroit River in LaSalle continues to increase. Over 300 were present Saturday evening along the shoreline opposite the south end of Fighting Island.
