2007 Cedar Creek Christmas Bird CountThe twenty-third Cedar Creek CBC held on December 15th, 2007 attracted 50 participants (including 12 feeder watchers) who walked and drove nearly 700 km to tally 88 species (long term average is 85 species) and 53,787 individuals. Weather was typical for mid December with frozen ponds but open water on Lake Erie. There was no snow cover for most of the day but a major snow storm started to produce snow in the late afternoon. At the end of the day we gathered at Tom and Peggy Hurst's for the tally and pot luck dinner.
Three new species were recorded for the count bringing the all-time
total to 154 species:
Record high counts were set for eight species: Other highlights included Cackling Goose (2), Mute Swan (2), Northern Shoveler (2), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (2), Red-bellied Woodpecker (64), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (2) and Common Redpoll (17). Only 7 American Kestrels were tallied, a record low count. American Crows (17,827) have decreased each year since 2002. The roost is located along County Road 8 on the west side of Essex. PARTICIPANTS: Area 1 Kingsville: (67 species, 29 party-hrs) Bob Sanford, Janet Tuite, Alan Wormington, Henrietta O'Neil, Mike Chomshyn, Adam Pinch, Dean Ware, Dan Loncke and four feeder watchers: (Robin & Valerie Dobson, John & Linda Dreiger, Dick Grolman, Steve Philips, Leah Swaddling, Peggy Hurst). Area 2 Essex-Cedar Beach: (51 species, 18 party-hrs) Paul DesJardins, Marg Calder, Cherise Charron, Karen Hass, Kathy Lesperance, Bob Wickett, Pauline Renaud, Ian Woodfield. Area 3 Gesto: (51 species, 29 party-hrs) JoAnn Grondin, Shirley Grondin, Donna Cowie, Helene Parks, Bernard Beneteau, Caroline Biribauer, Kyle Swiston, David Bradley, Jessica Cuthbert, Celia Chui and three feeder watchers: Linda Corkum. Crow Roost counters were Phil Roberts, Peggy Hurst, Janet Tuite and Linda Moore. Area 4 South Colchester: (64 species, 21 party-hrs) Thomas Hurst, Keith Burk, Jim Burk, Ron Muir, Anne Muir. Area 5 Harrow: (59 species, 12 party-hrs) Paul Pratt, Karen Cedar, Kristen Fawdry.
